What's been happening...
November 17th 2006, Meeting Notes,
Region 1 members from around
Due to the remote location many people took advantage of the Hill Houses' discounted room rates to be the first to arrive in the ocean view dining room on Friday morning. After everyone was seated with food and beverage, an informal introduction and issues session was an interesting beginning to the day. The eighteen attendees expressed interest in learning about algebra resources and writing prompts; pre and post assessment in these areas; issues and information around PE and Work Experience credits; resources used to practice for the CSHEE; record keeping; blending classroom and Independent work, both for students and for__ teachers; WASC and Charter schools and online learning, to name a few. As usual, teachers new to IS were supported and reassured by veteran IS teachers experience with compliance and administration. After a brief break to have a little time to walk outside on a beautiful, clear and sunny morning, the group adjourned to a meeting room, where our Representative, Beverly Karkruff explained the use that she is able to make of Avid program procedures. Bev used learn by doing as she explained "Cornell Note taking" and then gave us the chance to practice it, with her next lesson on "binders". She emphasized that almost all of her nearly 70% Hispanic High School population attends some form of higher education following graduation after being encouraged to use these techniques. A lively luncheon catered by the Hill House was another opportunity to network and socialize before spending the first afternoon session, on curriculum sharing, a helpful continuation of the morning discussion on math, language arts and the CSHEE. Teachers visiting the Mendocino area from Ukiah, Willits, Leggett Valley, Anderson Valley, Sabastopol, and Potter Valley then drove a few miles up the coast to the recently renovated Point Cabrillo Light House Station, the most complete station in the were mercifully still and the fall sky dramatic with the gathering storm which made for a rich half mile walk before heading home.
