What's been happening...
February 2006
Myself and Laura Hoertling are attending executive board meetings as liaisons as well as compliance trainees. It has been a very busy learning experience. For quite a few months I have used the web page and Sandy Steiger has asked through the newsletter for nominations to regional board slates. The deadline for your nominations is February 28, 2006. The slate includes Region II representative, assistant representative, secretary and treasurer.
It takes some deep thought, but no time at all to e-mail your name or those you feel are experienced, valuable independent study instructors or administrators.
Please e-mail me at jyanez@suhsd.net or call 530-245-2630. I am looking forward very much to hearing from you.

Notes from the Rep: November 11, 2005
It becomes more obvious to me that each progressive Region II workshop becomes more important and increases in attendance. After all, one cannot attend one workshop or conference and expect to be continually updated. Education, in particular, options education grows and changes constantly as the student needs and state and federal requirements change.
I am empowered to see more elementary, charter school, adult education and administrative attendance and involvement as we grow in power as a region. I applaud Jim Newell, principal of North State Independence High School (a 9-12 program) in Redding for allowing his entire staff to attend. This shows a tremendous trust in CCIS, Region II and his school staff and a powerful vision for the future of options education. Jim and I have also been working with Adult Education consultants and staff in order to strengthen our Adult education program and he invited the Shasta Adult Education facilitators to attend. I also wish to thank Michael Ramos, principal of Hearthstone School in Butte County for his queries, involvement and input regarding staff assistance and development. I invite all options administrators to attend and provide information at the workshops.
Dr. Mary Jones, CDE consultant shared effective IS practices which included such areas as NCLYB requirements, model schools and practices which have made great leaps in attendance and test results. Dr. Jones also spoke to the state core academic requirements, student test data usage, and on-line resources. During her question-answer period she provided web-sites and valuable contacts. For any questions she may be reached through the CDE website.
John Burns, the new CDE administrator of educational options spoke regarding the extreme growth and future need of educational options venues. Charter, home schools and Independent Study schools are on the increase. It is important for those of us in the field to keep this fact in our minds as we research the improvement and development of our services and curriculum. This is a focal point for involving and increasing your school board and district involvement and understanding of CCIS since we are so closely aligned with CDE.
According to Mr. Burns's experiences involving the state standards and texts approvals, he has found that no Option facilitators have been involved in these important processes. He called for panel members for these two area. Please contact Dr. Mary Jones if you are interested. I would also appreciate your contacting me for Region II records, newsletter and web-site communications.
During the Fall workshop we also held nominations for the Region II board. Final nominations must be called in or e-mailed to me by the last day of February so that we can hold the final voting at our Spring workshop. Nominations are open for Region II rep, Assistant rep, secretary, 3 scholarship committee members and as many Public Relations committee members as we can get. Please call me at (530) 245-2630 or e-mail at jyanez@suhsd.net as soon as you can. Our Spring Workshop will be held May 12 here in Redding. Please make plans with your district now. I am planning on compliancy updates, adult ed updates, sharing of writing strategies, elementary school curriculum and paper trails, starting IS programs from scratch, technology and on-line IS , (there are more:)
Please let me hear from you soon. You all are the most important aspects of Region II and I will pay close attention to your input and try to assist you in your concerns.

Notes from the Rep.
8/13/05
Another new year and I hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am. I am certainly anticipating being your representative for at least another year and of course getting to know more of you and being of more and better service to the organization.
Region II is becoming stronger in the consortium and more involved at the state level. I and Laura Hoertling, the assistant representative have been named special liaisons to the state executive board. Laura is also in charge of three statewide newsletters this year. Please send items of information and interest to her e-mail, lhoertling@suhsd.net
We will be attending executive board meetings, compliance and presenter trainings throughout the year. We will also represent the region membership at the state conference in Palm Springs this October.
The executive board meetings as well as all other events are open to all members. I hope that all who can, will attend. The information shared is invaluable and your knowledge, experience and ideas are essential to the ongoing growth and value of CCIS and Region II.
As your region representative I try to keep our website section updated and hope that all members use this service to keep informed. Please feel free to contact me at jyanez@suhsd.net or jodyshasta@aol.com with information I can add to the website and increase our networking.
The Region II workshop is scheduled for November 4, 2005 at the Kountry Kitchen in Orland. Pastries, coffee, tea, etc., will be provided during registration and the morning get-together. A buffet lunch is provided.
Dr. Mary Jones, CDE consultant will be the morning keynote speaker. Dr. Jones will be speaking and taking questions on compliancy. I feel honored when a member of the department of education feels how important this region is and assists us.
The afternoon sessions are still in the planning phase. I'm asking you as our members to consider presenting or leading a round table session. We have planned two simultaneous sessions. One dedicated to secondary I.S. and one to elementary I.S. Please e-mail me as soon as possible if you have a a special independent study aspect you feel comfortable presenting or if you can lead a round table sharing/discussion. Please remember that Region II workshops are informal, comfortable sharing sessions and no one is put on the spot.
Also, at the November workshop the Region II officers will be asking the membership for issues and concerns that we can share with the executive board. Without your input we cannot serve you. Begin planning to attend conferences and workshops now so that your districts can plan substitutes and find ways to fund you. You may also defray these costs as tax deductions.
We will be mailing registration forms for the November Region II workshop as soon as the agenda is finalized. We can't finalize the agenda without you help.
Have a wonderful new school year and please contact me at anytime.
